The Port of Harbor (Brookings) on the Southern Oregon Coast
Brookings is the southern gate way the Oregon Coast
Brookings and Harbor (its sister city south of the river) lie at the junction of the Chetco River and the Pacific Ocean. Many call this area the "Banana Belt" of the Oregon coast. Brookings is just six miles north of the California border and has the warmest average temperatures on the Oregon coast.
Brookings-Harbor has become home to many retirees and is one of the fastest-growing real estate markets on the coast. Commercial flower growing is one of the area industries and you can see fields abloom in color in spring and summer. There are also many shops, restaurants and a performing arts center where plays by the local theatre group are performed.
This area is home of the Coast Guard Station Chetco River and being retired from the Coast Guard and still active in the Coast Guard Auxiliary, I find myself visiting area often.
